Marcia is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2018 Jazz Hero Award for the City of Portland from the nationally recognized Jazz Journalists Association. \nThis event brings together musicians of many genres to pay tribute to one of the greatest jazz singers and songwriters of our time. Billie Holiday\, also known as “Lady Day\,” was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday was a hugely formative influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style\, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists\, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. This show always proves to be a fun night of local ladies singing their hearts out for the love of Ms. Parton – who is arguably the most successful female country singer of all time.  \nA portion of each ticket goes to support the Willamina Public Library. \nWe’ve chosen the Willamina Public Library in honor of Dolly’s devotion to literacy\, specifically in rural areas. The Willamina Public Library serves as a resource hub and gathering place for the local community. Find out how they get started on a piece\, see it forward\, and explore the power of language and art. \nSpeakers\nDao Strom is an artist who works with three “voices”—written\, sung\, visual—to explore hybridity and the intersection of personal and collective histories. The author of five books and two song-cycles\, most recently the poetry collection Instrument (Fonograf Editions) and its companion album\, Traveler’s Ode (Antiquated Future Records)\, Strom was born in Vietnam and grew up in the Sierra Nevadas of California. Her bilingual poetry-art book\, You Will Always Be Someone From Somewhere Else (AJAR Press)\, was a finalist for the 2019 Firecracker Award for Poetry. Her debut essay collection\, Funeral for Flaca\, is available for pre-order now and out with Future Tense Books on July 1\, 2021.. \nMadison Cario\nMadison Cario (they/them) became RACC’s Executive Director in January 2019\, bringing more than 20 years of experience serving a broad variety of constituents from nonprofits\, community-based organizations\, city and county government offices to creatives\, small businesses\, and the education sector. A constellation mapper\, they believe in creating authentic networks that are built to hold space for diversity.  \nPrior to joining RACC\, Madison was the inaugural Director of the Office of the Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, where they were lauded for their strategic and entrepreneurial approach to innovation\, collaboration\, and creation in arts and culture. Madison has held a variety of senior-level positions in the nonprofit sector\, including the East Bay Conservation Corps in Oakland\, Painted Bride Arts Center in Philadelphia\, and Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. They have served as an advisor to the National Dance Project\, the MAP Fund\, the NEA\, and other funding and advocacy organizations.  \nTheir lived experience as trans and neurodiverse has informed their focus on equity\, and their experience as a leader\, technician\, presenter\, producer\, funder\, and advocate makes it possible to shift across genres and geographies while keeping local\, regional\, and national horizons in view. Madison is an artist\, administrator\, ambassador\, and advocate for the arts. \nSarah Clarke\nSarah Clarke (she/her) is a Black activist\, musician\, equity advocate\, and mother\, born\, raised\, and currently residing in Portland\, OR. Perhaps best known as the vocalist of Dirty Revival\, she can be found on stages with a variety of acts in the Pacific Northwest. With an industry halt on touring and performing\, Sarah has been able to focus on her passion for advocacy work\, and in June of 2020 she founded Musicians in Solidarity\, working with like-minded individuals to build more equitable and inclusive avenues and programming in the world of music. \nShe is one of several Portland musicians working to develop the community-run record group People Music\, a label dedicated to supporting artists through both the creative and business sides of the music-making process\, all while operating with the core belief that artists should retain ownership of their creations. Sarah is also the co-director of MusicPortland’s Black Equity program\, LEAP\, focused on building equitable infrastructure within Portland’s musical ecosystem. \nKisha Jarrett\nKisha Jarrett (she/her) is the Managing Director at Artists Repertory Theatre (ART) in Portland\, Oregon. She is a creative change-maker with a background in marketing and development throughout her ten-year career in arts management that has helped raise over $50 million for various organizations and has a cumulative earned revenue of over $5 million. A Virginia native\, she has lived all over the country and now calls Portland\, Oregon home.  \nKisha is also a writer\, director\, producer\, actor\, musician\, and storyteller. She has performed for both stage and screen\, been a musician at SXSW\, and has been a costume designer for the stage and television\, and an independent bakery owner. Through storytelling\, she has performed for the Moth (2017 and 2018 GrandSLAM winner)\, Seven Deadly Sins\, Wildfang\, and Back Fence PDX where she is a co-host and story producer. Most recently\, Kisha was seen onstage at Portland Center Stage @ The Armory as the Headmistress in School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play\, a co-production with ART. She is working on her second feature-length screenplay\, pre-production for a feature-length documentary (Black Girl in the Woods) and an educational piece for the Oregon Bar Association (about four black suffragettes in Oregon who deserve to have their stories told)\, post-production on the first devised DNA:Oxygen short film (See Me)\, and writing her first novel.  \nKisha is proud to be a co-founder of the DNA: Oxygen program at ART. She is in the inaugural cohort of the LORT EDI Mentor/Mentee program and serves on the LORT EDI committee. Kisha is on the Literary Arts Festival of the Book Committee and has served as an Event Producer for Oregon Media Production Association (OMPA)\, Children’s Book Bank\, Boys and Girls Club\, Artists Rep\, Live Arts\, MTV Woodie Awards\, Invisible Children\, World Monuments Fund\, and School of Visual Arts. She serves on the board of directors of Global Works Community Fund. \nTara Johnson-Medinger\nTara Johnson-Medinger (she/her)is a film director\, producer and champion of gender equality in the entertainment industry. Co-producer of the award-winning music documentary The Winding Stream and feature film City Baby\, her feature film directorial debut My Summer as a Goth was released in 2020. An advocate for women in film\, Tara honors groundbreaking female and nonbinary filmmakers as Executive Director of the international Power of Women in Film Festival (POW Film Fest)\, while developing the next generation of media makers through the youth education forum she founded\, POWGirls.   \nTara served on the founding board of directors of Women in Film Portland and was awarded the 2013 Service & Inspiration Award by the Oregon Media Production Association. Before moving to Portland\, she was a manager of affiliate promotion at the FOX Broadcasting Company in Los Angeles. Billie Holiday\, also known as “Lady Day\,” was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday was a hugely formative influence on jazz and pop singing. \nHer vocal style\, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists\, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Above all\, she was admired all over the world for her deeply personal and intimate approach to singing. \nSiren Nation promotes and showcases the original work of women artists by creating year-round performance\, exhibition\, and educational opportunities. The Billie Holiday Tribute Night is a fundraiser show that will help support the free online series Siren Nation Speaks\, as well as other free events. \nWatch the concert online on April 3\, 2021\, beginning at 7:00 pm. \nA portion of each ticket sale will be donated to KairosPDX: An education-focused nonprofit attacking Portland’s persistent achievement gap through innovative pedagogy\, community collaboration\, and family partnership. \nSiren Nation is a Portland-based nonprofit whose mission is to inspire and empower women of all ages to create their own art and to highlight the many achievements of women in the arts. While many things remain uncertain about the stability of landmark arts institutions\, timelines for potential reopenings\, and the pandemic itself\, Siren Nation continues to be committed to supporting womxn creatives in the Pacific Northwest. \nFor this reason\, the Young Creatives Collective is launching a virtual matchmaking networking program for all PacNW womxn in the arts. All womxn-identifying creatives are welcome—whether you are a veteran in the professional arts world\, an aspiring professional artist\, or a person with a day job but a passion for arts on the side\, we would love your participation. YCC leaders will pair two participants together\, make the introduction\, provide suggested conversation prompts\, and instructions for setting up a Zoom\, Google Meet\, or FaceTime. \nThe creative industries are currently in uncharted waters. In these times\, sharing expertise\, advice\, and support feels especially important. We’re hoping this will be an ongoing program\, with new pairings every other month.  \nInterested? Paul\, Piano\nSavannah Gentry\, Flute\nRebecca Larkin\, Flute\nRobert Wakeley\, Flute\nMinsun Song\, Flute \nSavannah Gentry: Described as a “monster” flute player (Mostly Modern Music Festival)\, Savannah Gentry has always been a connoisseur of contemporary ideas\, new works\, and meaningful performances. She has performed orchestral\, chamber\, and solo music and working with renowned musicians\, composers\, and faculty to further her goals of promoting women and other underrepresented composers. \nUpon her return to the Portland\, Savannah has performed with Caballito Negro & Friends at Portland State University\, founded new music group Persisiting Sound\, premiered works by emerging composer and co-founder of Persisiting Sound. \nCarolyn Quick began teaching private lessons in the Evergreen District\, and spearheaded this Women in Classical Music Showcase in Collaboration with Siren Nation. \nLast fall\, she spent six weeks in New York at the ‘The Studio’ with high energy chamber group Project Trio where she learned how to beatbox flute and improvise from Greg Patillo and performed in venues such as Rockwood music center. In 2017\, she performed with Orchestra Next and at the Soundscape Contemporary Music Festival in Cesana\, Italy; and in the Summer of 2016 she performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Composer Symposium\, collaborating with both established and student composers. She also performed with the Music in the Mountain Festival (2016) where she performed orchestral and chamber music in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Her flute quartet won second place at the Flute Society of Kentucky Quartet Competition (2017) performing Rebecca Larkin’s flute quartet In Contrast. \nSavannah studied at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University (MM) with Thomas Robertello and at the University of Oregon (BM) with Molly Barth. \nCarolyn Quick is a “versatile young soprano” (Eugene Opera) with a “pure timbre” (Opera News) and “haunting” voice who proves “once again that a girl can do whatever a boy can do!” (Eugene Opera). With over nine years of voice lessons\, fourteen years of choral experience\, and two years of involvement in both opera and early music\, she has acquired a vast repertoire of vocal knowledge from a variety of genres and periods and is always eager to continue learning. \nAs a composer\, Carolyn’s music if full of striking rhythms and expressive melodies\, bridging multiple styles and mediums through lyricism and orchestration. Her works have been performed throughout North America and Europe by ensembles including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra\, the Erato Ensemble\, and soloists from the Vancouver Opera’s New Works project. In the Fall of 2019\, Carolyn was featured on the inaugural concert of the up-and-coming chamber orchestra Symphony 21. She was also chosen as one of eight composers commissioned to write for HEARINGS: the opening concert of Fear No Music’s 2019-2020 season Justice (Just Us); and co-founded the new music group Persisting Sound with flutist and Portland native Savannah Gentry. \nCarolyn holds a MMus in Composition from the University of British Columbia and a BMus from the University of Oregon. Her teachers include: Dorothy Chang\, Jocelyn Morlock\, Stephen Chatman\, Robert Kyr\, David Crumb\, and Terry McQuilkin. \nEvan C. Paul was born in Providence\, Rhode Island in 1981. He holds a Ph.D. in composition with a supporting area in music theory from the University of Oregon. He has garnered recognition through a number of awards and competitions\, including the Delta Omicron Music Solo Competition (2000)\, the Ed Diemente Composition Award (2002)\, the MTNA Young Composers Competition (2005)\, and the Portland Vocal Consort’s Young Composer Contest (2011). \nEvan is active as a composer and collaborative pianist in the Portland area. In addition to coaching singers\, instrumentalists and chamber ensembles\, he plays with the Portland Phoenix Choral Union\, Bridging Voices (Portland’s LGBTQ+ youth choir)\, Portland Opera\, Ping & Woof Opera\, and the Portland chapter of Opera On Tap. His compositions focus on song\, choral works\, and chamber music featuring woodwinds and brass instruments. His newest composition\, Magenta for saxophone quartet and piano\, will be premiered in the spring of 2020. \nRebecca Larkin is a musical storyteller. As a flutist and composer\, her music conveys an unraveling narrative that she and her audience may interpret in any way they wish. Inspired by soundtracks and concert music alike\, Rebecca writes visual music for the stage and screen. She has been named a finalist for the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award and a scholar for the Game Audio Network Guild. She is an enthusiastic collaborator and constantly seeks opportunities to create new cross-disciplinary work. An active performer of new music\, Rebecca has recently been a featured soloist with the North Country Electronic Music Festival\, Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium\, and Art City Eugene’s Studio Without Walls. When Rebecca is not composing or performing\, she is an avid gamer and spends quality time with her rabbit\, Oreo. \nRobert Wakeley is a freelance flutist and teacher based in Portland and a doctoral candidate in flute performance at the University of Minnesota. He is currently the 2nd flutist/piccoloist of the Eugene Concert Orchestra and performs regularly as a substitute and extra musician with the Rogue Valley Symphony. Other recent concert highlights include performances with the Balkanicus Contemporary Ensemble in Minneapolis\, live on Minnesota Public Radio in a broadcast concert featuring works by young Minnesota composers\, and as a soloist with the University of Minnesota Chamber Singers. In 2018\, he was awarded the Thelma Hunter Schubert Club Award at the Schubert Club Scholarship Competition in Minneapolis and has also placed at the Coeur d’Alene Symphony National Young Artist Competition and the Upper Midwest Flute Association Young Artist Competition. \nMinsun Song is a flutist with a diverse background and interest. She received her bachelor’s degree at Whitman College in music and mathematics and her master of music at the University of Minnesota. On top of her musical training\, she is also a band instrument repair technician\, servicing wind and brass instruments. Her most influential teachers include Immanuel Davis\, Sydney Carlson\, and Rachel Chacko. She has also performed in masterclasses for Alexa Still\, Keith Underwood\, Mark Sparks\, and Adam Kuenzel.
