SUMMARY:The Importance of Ethics in Plant Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Siren Nation\, amplifying the voices of women in the arts for the past 15 years\, is proud to present Siren Nation Speaks—a new monthly online series of free workshops\, talks\, and performances. Join us as we showcase a new Oregon/PNW female artist every second Sunday of the month! \nSession Description\nOn April 11\, join us for a free presentation on the ethics of plant medicine\, featuring content creator\, recipe author\, and private plant medicine coach Liv Vasquez. \nWe’re currently witnessing a plant medicine boom in the U.S. as more access becomes available around cannabis and hemp. At the same time\, there’s a crisis in healthcare—access to hospitals is becoming more scarce\, even as more people are gaining access to plant medicine. \nWhy is it important for consumers to vote with their dollars and support ethical brands? Why does every purchase matter in this multibillion-dollar industry? Because unethical brands are a bad buy and they have a bad impact on the world. \nIn this session\, Liv Vasquez tells you what to look for in a brand that will be a great investment for you and help to build a better landscape for plant medicine as an industry. \nAbout Our Speaker\nLiv Vasquez is a chef and cannabis educator with a mission to help people develop a clearer understanding of cannabis as a plant and an industry. She brings her experience as a chef\, recipe writer\, and restaurateur to the cannabis/CBD space by using beautiful events and beautiful plates as an educational tool to teach about hemp\, cannabis\, this emerging industry\, and plant medicine. Her beautiful traveling pop-up events always bring a spotlight to the importance of ethical cultivation and safety in the workplace in this budding billion-dollar industry. \nLiv’s audience is global\, ranging from home cooks and grandmas who want to incorporate plant medicine into their lives\, to corporations like Pepsi that want to add CBD to their products. Liv has been called the “Alton Brown” of cannabis\, because she has a clear understanding of the science\, strain heritage\, plant cultivation\, and ethics\, as well as medicine and digestion. \nLiv also works to make safer spaces for women and people with disabilities within the cannabis industry. In 2019 she took an unethical cannabis business to court for harassment and discrimination\, in a case that she won. \nYou can currently find Liv on Netflix’s Cooked with Cannabis\, as a content creator\, recipe writer\, and private plant medicine coach for clients all over North America. \n \nSupport Siren Nation\nYou can support Siren Nation’s mission by donating via Eventbrite\, our donations page\, or Amazon Smile. Donations to Siren Nation are tax-deductible\, and Oregon residents can get an additional tax credit by also donating to the Oregon Cultural Trust.

SUMMARY:Hell Hath No Funny! Comedy / Nov. 9 / Alberta St. Pub
DESCRIPTION:Hell Hath No Funny! Comedy Showcase\nFeaturing: Kate Murphy\, Andy Iwancio\, Katie Nguyen\, Quinne Salameh\, Susan Rice\nSaturday\, November 9\, 2019\nThe Alberta Street Pub.\n1036 NE Alberta St. Portland\, OR\, 97211\n9 PM. 21+. $12\nhttp://www.albertastreetpub.com/ \nGet tickets: https://www.merctickets.com/events/100772435/hell-hath-no-funny-comedy-showcase \nFor years\, Portland has been on the national map for amazing comedy. Our city is known to have more female produced comedy shows than any other local scene. This city is loaded with hilariously talented humans and we’ve handpicked some of our favorites for you! \nSusan Rice: For over 35 years Susan Rice has worked as a stand up comic. She is one of Portland\, OR’s original stand-ups\, beginning in 1983 at the Leaky Roof Tavern. Her career as a comic has taken her all over the US and Canada\, as well as the Caribbean and Mexico. She has appeared on HBO\, Showtime\, Comedy Central\, A&E\, ABC\, CBS\, and Fox.\nShe was more recently featured on Portlandia and named by Willamette Week “Portland’s Funniest Person.” Rice was recently Arsenio Hall’s opening act as well as Maria Bamford’s. She is familiar because she reminds everyone of an auntie they should check in on more often. Rice can be seen often at Harvey’s Comedy Club\, her home club\, or performing for various corporations or charity events. She is the co-founder of the podcast “Stop Me If I’ve Heard This.” \nKatie Nguyen is a writer and comedian. Her writing has been featured in The New Yorker and she is a regular at Helium Comedy Club. She has performed at comedy festivals across the country and hosts the weekly show Earthquake Hurricane. Katie has twice been named one of the Portland Mercury’s Geniuses of Comedy and has taught comedy classes and workshops at Portland Center Stage and Deep End Theater. \nAndy Iwancio: is a transgender gal comedian from Seattle who waxes poetics on being transgender\, growing boobs\, and then\, subsequently\, shaking those boobs because of her epilepsy. So\, all of that\, plus puns. She has opened for Whitmer Thomas\, James Adomian\, and Cameron Esposito. Festival-wise\, she has done Bumbershoot\, Out of Bounds\, Altercation\, Women in Comedy NW\, Ha-Ha Harvest Festival\, Intersections\, and All-Jane. She also appeared in the HUMP! film-festival award-winning film “Queer Safari” and the Emmy award-winning movie “Star Wars Uncut.” \nComedian Quinne Salameh self identifies as Bi-Racial\, Queer\, and extremely cheap so it’s gonna be a good time. Quinne is a new member of the “That’s What She Said” feminist comedy collective and was a performer on this year’s Portland Queer Comedy Festival. She brings good vibes but will shame you for your purchase of novelty hummus. You can catch her on Shows all over Portland including this year’s HaHa Harvest fest. \nKate Murphy is a Portland comic\, born and raised in Bozeman\, MT. Kate Murphy wrote and co-produced the short film “A HUMP! Public Service Announcement” which won ‘best humor’ HUMP! Film Festival 2017. She’s been featured in Hell Yes Fest\, The NW Women’s Comedy Festival\, and was a finalist in Helium Comedy Club’s Portland’s Funniest Person 2018. She was named one of the Portland Mercury’s Undisputed Geniuses of Comedy 2018 and is the current host of the Portland Mercury’s The I\, Anonymous Show.
