SUMMARY:Paper Bird w/ Ballroom Thieves
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 10: Paper Bird w/ Ballroom Thieves \nMississippi Studios \nDoors at 8:00pm. Show at 9:00pm\nwww.mississippistudios.com\nFor Paper Bird\, their new album marks a milestone. More importantly\, it provides them with a new beginning\, a new chapter in their trajectory that sees them redefining their direction\, a change in their musical sensibility while maintaining their trademark upbeat attitude. The band’s self titled album\, available September 9th on Thirty Tigers Records/ Sons of Thunder Records\, introduces vocalist Carleigh Aikins to the lineup\, whose previous credits include extended stints with the critically acclaimed bands Bahamas and Fox Jaws. Her addition to the band adds an extra edge\, highlighting a clear sonic evolution. A shift in the band’s lineup has opened up new possibilities\, swapping electric guitars and amped up instrumentation for the laid back\, folkflavored sound they favored in the past.\nhttp://www.paperbirdband.com/ \n\nFor The Ballroom Thieves\, the band’s journey has only just begun\, but their roots already run quite deep. Now\, on A Wolf in the Doorway the Thieves find themselves taking the very idea of “roots” and creating ways to make its associated sound progress\, while making its encompassing spirit glow. Stylistically\, the trio finds a captivating mélange of acoustic styles\, blending folk conventions with modern hymnals\, delta blues grit with rich harmonies\, exploring the basic constructions of pop music while almost wholeheartedly rejecting its restrictions at the same time. \n\nhttp://www.ballroomthieves.com/

SUMMARY:Genders CD release show
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Nov. 5 Genders CD release show.\nwith Máscaras and Laura Palmer’s Death Parade \nAt Mississippi Studios\nDoors: 8:00pm / Show: 9:00pm\nTickets: $10. 21+.\nwww.mississippistudios.com\nThe members of Portland’s Genders had already closed the book on their previous band by the time they received the news that it had been voted one of the city’s best new acts. Seemingly\, this was just the motivation they needed to accelerate through the tiresome early stages of establishing their new project. Now – four years and countless road hours later\, including a full national tour opening for Built To Spill – the gang of four is preparing for their sixth release with the kind of confidence that can only be gained from experience. Phone Home features five new reverb-drenched rockers that take a slightly different approach than the band’s previous adventures with dream pop; the new bunch sounding more like a nightmare than any kind of dream.\nhttps://genderspdx.bandcamp.com/

Come out and hear stories on the theme: Fight or Flight! \nArrive early to sign up to tell your own story! We will choose two storytellers from the audience. Sign up to tell your own story and you could be one of two lucky audience members to get time in the limelight! \nThis edition is hosted by Belinda Carroll. \nStorytellers:\nLesley Harper\nDarka Dusty\nEmily Overstreet\nLyndsi Lambert \nTickets are $10 online and $12 at the door. This event is 21 and over. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8!\nBUY TICKETS HERE! \nBelinda Carroll is a Portland\, Oregon native\, LGBTQ activist and coffee addict. A stand-up comedian\, actress\, and singer; she has appeared on fun stuff like Portlandia\, MTV\, XM Sirius radio and Grimm a couple of times. Her writing credits include\, Huffington Post\, Cracked.com\, and PQ Monthly. She also has opened or featured for people like Shane Mauss\, Erasure (Andy Bell)\, Jason Stuart\, Julie Goldman\, Deanne Smith\, ANT\, Dwight Slade\, and Laurie Kilmartin. \nLesley Harper is a storyteller who has been a competitor in The Moth’s Portland GrandSlam and featured in Back Fence PDX’s Russian Roulette series\, Tad’s Talks\, Blumesday\, “It’s not me\, it’s you: Stories from the dark side of dating”\, a benefit for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon\, and Unchaste Readers Series among others. She is the Director of Development for Full Resolve Consulting (www.fullresolve.com) where she writes and facilitates empathy and creativity-based workshops across the Pacific Northwest. She also teaches storytelling workshops and is Senior Producer of the storytelling show\, YARN. She lives with her husband-type\, daughter and 3 dumb cats in Portland\, OR. \nDarka Dusty is a writer and musician. Born in Detroit\, MI\, Darka spent many years in New York City and London\, England while she worked for the Economist and Jive Records. Darka was once one half of NYC-based Ukrainian music duo\, “Darka & Slavko” producing popular records and winning “Best International Band” at the first non-Soviet Ukrainian Pop Music Festival. Darka sings\, plays piano and accordion as a soloist or with several Portland bands. When she’s not performing\, Darka runs a photography company with her partner\, Miri. She’s also a contributing writer for several local magazines and writes love horoscopes forDailyHoroscope.com. \nEmily Overstreet is a musician\, graphic designer\, and ticketing manager for True West and the Aladdin Theater. She currently plays Wurlitzer and sings in the Portland band Bitch’n. She will do anything to get on a plane and go somewhere (anywhere) and loves talking to strangers. Emily has been known to release a belly-laugh so hearty that it will send the neighborhood cats beelining for shelter and solace. \nLyndsi Lambert is an amateur storyteller who doesn’t deserve to share a stage with the incomparable artists listed above. As an adolescent who hated growing up in Louisiana\, she wrote songs and poems to help her cope\, including one stand-out ballad describing how she’d murder her ex-high school boyfriend and his new girlfriend that she read aloud in English AP to an audience of terrified onlookers. While living in New Orleans\, she performed a piece entitled “Ball Worship” as Luscious Lou at Esoterotica in response to the theme “Strange Love”. And while earning her MA in Women’s Spirituality in San Francisco\, Lyndsi completed her thesis on the Major Themes Found in Contemporary Menstrual Art by painting herself in her own menstrual blood and howling naked under a full moon. In an effort to transition from a “shadow artist” to a real one\, she’s currently working on a memoir that she hopes Reese Witherspoon won’t be able to put down.
