Siren Nation Speaks is excited to present “Building your DJ Toolkit” with We Got Next on July 11! This is a free skill-sharing workshop and educational resource that empowers DJs and artists who are underrepresented in the mainstream. We Got Next programming is open to all, but the priority is for Women of Color and anyone with a lived experience of misogyny, regardless of their gender identity.

The workshop will focus on building your DJ toolkit as you begin your journey as a music curator, and feature a networking session with fellow DJs. This will be an inclusive space that is safe for cis, trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse folks of all racial identities to learn, build community, and grow as artists.

No special equipment is needed. Feel free to bring your questions and tips to share!

Workshop Leaders

DJ Black Daria is a music curator, producer, and Portland-based DJ. She is a co-host of Everyday Mixtapes on XRAY.FM alongside DJ Shi Shi, and reps the Noche Libre DJ collective. She is a force of her Black and Mexican roots, reclaiming the dance floor with classic riddims, chopped n screwed reworks, neo perreo, whine anthems, throwback bops, and everything in between. As the former Director of Marketing and Sponsorship at XRAY.FM, Jené has built an extensive network of musicians, DJs, creators, business owners, and supporters of independent media. Currently, she helps clients find, compose, or license music for branded content, TV, and film at Marmoset Music.

DJ Shi Shi is a Portland-based DJ and teacher. She is a selector of house, global dance music, and loves Prince and Janet Jackson. Her sets are always mood- and space-driven and set to get people dancing. In addition to playing in clubs in Portland and beyond, she co-hosts Everyday Mixtapes with DJ Black Daria on XRAY.FM. Doubling as a teacher, Shira is motivated by the intersection of personal advocacy, storytelling through various mediums, and media. She has taught DJing at YAE! Camp and started Young Audio Makers (YAMS), a workshop and after-school program dedicated to providing pre-professional training to youth interested in broadcast engineering and audio-based storytelling.
