Rejoice! Presents A Midsummer Night at the Savoy

Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater presents A Midsummer Night at the Savoy, a premier of choreographic works bringing Shakespeare to the night life of Harlem. An evening of lust, love, style, community uplift. The Savoy inspired African-American arts to flourish while changing the cultural landscape of America. Now imagine if it never closed.

Four choreographers, one story-line, plus a community ensemble will bring the energy of Harlem to Portland. Imagine Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a poetic through line, all set in the historic Savoy Ballroom. Experience this twist on Shakespeare and the contributions of artists of color throughout history.

A Midsummer Night at the Savoy features premier choreographic works by Oluyinka Akinjiola, Decimus, Michael Galen, and Jamie Minkus, with Kevin Jones as the voice of Langston Hughes, and Dramaturgy by Brian and Nikki Weaver. Funding and support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Multnomah County Cultural Coalition, and Ronni LaCroute.
