"Because no matter what decade it is, every girl can relate to the feeling of wanting to bite someone's head off." 🐺 Our lead actor Marlowe Lee (@12311998_) chats about their character, "Cheryl," and the horrifying inspiration behind "NIGHT SHIFT." 🩸

The horror genre is a visceral story-telling medium that allows filmmakers to explore an array of social issues in a digestible, entertaining and cathartic way. NIGHT SHIFT is not only the story of female friendship and empowerment, but also works as a criticism of misogyny, sexual harassment, and small-town conservatism.

In this way, the true horror within the film is not the monstrous transformation experienced by Cheryl, but rather the lack of male accountability and the persecution she experiences. While set nearly 40 years in the past, Cheryl’s struggles throughout the film speak upon many of the issues & inequalities young women still face today.

The NIGHT SHIFT @seedandspark is live NOW! Follow the link in our bio or visit https://seedandspark.com/fund/night-shift-pdx to support our diverse team in making our film come to life

As the end of another extraordinary year draws to a close, we at Siren Nation want to share with you what we’ve been up to behind the scenes―and ask for your support.⠀
⠀
We hope to inspire you to take part in our special online giving campaign. This campaign will help us fund our programming for 2022, including Siren Nation Speaks, the annual Billie Holiday Tribute Night, and our yearly Dolly Parton Hoot Night.⠀
⠀
Siren Nation has been amplifying the voices of women in the arts for the last 16 years. We can hardly believe it’s been that long! As COVID shook the art world in 2020, Siren Nation took a big hit, but we were able to adapt and survive. Because of the pandemic’s ongoing effect, museums, art fairs, galleries, and many art institutions―including Siren Nation―were forced to cancel or alter their programming. For organizations like Siren Nation that rely on live events, this changed the way we operate.⠀
⠀
Looking back, the pandemic accelerated changes that were already in progress for Siren Nation―it inspired us to innovate, create new programming, and evolve our mission. We’re grateful that access to relief funding and grants was streamlined for small nonprofits like us.⠀
⠀
In 2021 Siren Nation launched Siren Nation Speaks! A new online series of workshops, talks, and performances. Siren Nation Speaks is a new part of Siren Nation’s mission: to inspire and empower women and people of all marginalized genders to create art, and to highlight their many achievements in the arts. These events are free, online, and open to all. With your support, we hope to be able to offer hybrid events in 2022, with additional limited in-person attendance.⠀
⠀
After postponing our signature Billie Holiday Tribute Night and Dolly Parton Hoot Night in 2020, we brought them back this year. We were able to showcase local performers and broadcast their wonderful tributes online and on the airwaves thanks to partnerships with the Alberta Rose Theatre and KBOO Community Radio.⠀
⠀
Two years into the pandemic, Siren Nation continues to adapt and evolve. We invite you to come along on our journey. ⠀

She Who Has No Master(s) is a program and collective art project that seeks to bring together the “multi-voices" of womxn and nonbinary writers of the Vietnamese diaspora. Can you help the DVAN reach their fundraising goal and sponsor a 1-on-1 creative mentorship for emerging writers by 2022? Find more details below + in our bio to learn how you can help foster community, broaden visibility, and engage meaningfully across diasporic divides!
🦋
@herandthesea In 2022, She Who Has No Master(s) will initiate a creative writing mentorship program led by and designed for Vietnamese and SE Asian diasporic women and nonbinary writers. The centering of this perspective is important because in most educational settings the focus on subject matter and perspectives of women/nonbinary SE Asian diasporic women is marginal, if not totally unaddressed. In creating educational spaces that center those viewpoints, we create a nourishing space in which aspiring writers can see themselves, explore, and embrace their own particularities, and create more expansively. We believe these offerings will fulfill a dire contemporary need in our nation’s current environment for creative writing education. Our hope is to turn this into an annual offering.
🦋
The mentors for our inaugural 2022 mentorship program will be: Diana Khoi Nguyen, Hoa Nguyen, Lily Hoang, Vi Khi Nao. // @fitproblems @hn2626 @lilypad326 @vikhinao

Introducing our guest speakers for tomorrow's #SirenNationSpeaks event “Poetry Reading & Process Talk” (link in our bio to register!) 📚✨

Finally we have Michele Glazer, an author and MFA/BFA professor from Portland Oregon.
Michele is the author of four books, most recently "fretwork" (Iowa 2021).
She says of these poems, “I try to place myself in the presence of damage—fragmentation, disruption, gap—where language ‘fails,’ and where the natural world, if looked at closely, might offer a way to get at, get in, gather soundings. In this, my work is inspired by language, by feeling at a loss for language, and trying, in language, to give shape to a silence that gets at loss.”
Her previous books are "It Is Hard to Look at What We Came to Think We’d Come to See" (Pittsburgh), "Aggregate of Disturbances" (Iowa), and "On Tact, & the Made Up World" (Iowa). Glazer teaches in the MFA and BFA programs at Portland State University.
